OXFORD, Maine – Oxford Plains Speedway Acceleration Series fans were
reminded Wednesday night that the driver who takes the leisurely lap
of honor and gets to rattle off a list of thank-yous and sponsors into
the victory lane microphone isn't always the winner.
First place changed hands in three of eight 20-lap features after the
technical inspectors gave the leaders a fine-toothed comb.
That process made a winner of rookie Nate Dubuc in only the second
start of his OPS Renegade career. Dubuc crossed the stripe third but
was officially credited with leading all 20 laps after the one-two
combination of Zach Bowie and Jamie Heath were dismissed in the
inspection line.
Two of the three Chimney Tech Outlaw results were overturned, as well.
Nik Coates moved up the ladder to his second win of the season when
Tom Averill's ride didn't clear the post-race hurdle. Thom Bell took
top honors in the high-point feature when David Childs' original
winning effort got the thumb.
Other feature winners were Addison Bowie in Outlaw; Derek Cook and
Doug Degroat in Macdonald Motors Runnin' Rebel; Marvin Hamilton with
his second straight triumph in Call of the Wild RV Center Sport Truck;
and Vanna Brackett in Allen's Coffee Flavored Brandy Ladies.
Coates was a worthy winner, staying within two car lengths of Averill
throughout the Outlaw opener.
Five cars dueled for what would become the runner-up spot over the
duration, with Ron Abbott Jr. edging Josh Paradis for the spot. Carey
Robertson celebrated his 33rd birthday in the fourth spot, with Tyler
Belanger fifth following a determined drive in the outside lane from
start to finish.
Zach Bowie's second-place finish in the Outlaw 'B' main also was
disallowed, negating a thrilling race with relative Addison in which
the two exchanged the lead four times.
"I'm glad I was the one out ahead of him," Addison Bowie admitted. "He
treated me pretty well."
Jerry Freve was elevated to second, with Gordon Bell getting his hands
on the third-place trophy. Bubba Collins and Kevin Lawrence completed
the restructured top five.
Childs caught Jim Archer on lap 5, but the actual pass for the win
took place when Thom Bell wheeled around Archer on the halfway
circuit.
Bell battled Dan Brown down the stretch, keeping him a car length in
arrears. Guy Childs Sr. squeezed to the low side of Steve Moon to
claim third, with Jerry Goss continuing his impressive streak of
top-five results.
The four-cylinder Rebels escaped the wrath of the rulebook.
Cook ruled the 'B' opener with an iron fist, chasing down early
leaders Mike Anderson and Bill Dunphy and taking the lead on lap 9. He
left David Childs in the distance by almost a full straightaway at the
finish.
"There was so much traffic early in the race that I didn't know if it
would be a good night or a bad night," Cook said.
Childs got to keep his Rebel trophy for second, followed by Brandon
Munroe third in his initial start of the season. Dunphy held on for
fourth, with rookie Jason Berry winning a drag race to the line with
Gerard Cote to grab fifth.
Round two for the Rebels was arguably the best race of the night, with
Charlie Webster and Archie Watt Jr. swapping the top spot three times
before Calvin Rose Jr, entered the fray.
Webster and Watt drifted high after Rose made an inside bid for the
lead on lap 10. Rose maintained the newfound advantage for only four
laps before Degroat took command.
"We finally got one with this car," said Degroat, who hadn't won a
Rebel feature since July 2004. "I actually worked on it last night. I
guess I ought to work on it more often."
Kyle Hewins charged from the middle of the pack but couldn't make a
dent in Degroat's lead down the stretch and settled for second. Scott
Farrington, Troy Jordan and Gregg Norton rounded out the top five.
Rose wound up the best finisher of the early leaders in eighth.
Hamilton has at least tempered champion Jake Burns' aura of
invincibility, beating him by a truck length or less in each of the
first two Wednesday races.
John Lizotte led the first seven laps before Hamilton made his winning
move. Burns moved into second shortly thereafter and made several
determined tries to get around Hamilton.
Burns pulled nearly even with two laps to go, but the 2002 track
champion used traffic to his advantage and protected the narrow edge.
"He's a tough competitor," said Hamilton. "I can't believe we did this
well, because this is a back-up motor. We fried the other one last
week."
Lizotte was a solid third, with Ryan Farrar fourth and Opie Allard
recovering from an early spin for fifth.
One week after opening her title defense with only a seventh-place
finish, Brackett returned to familiar territory with a convincing win.
The third-generation driver powered past Kimberly Sessions on lap 5.
Cathy Manchester charged from the rear of the field to second and took
small bites out of Brackett's hefty lead, but the champ persisted and
pulled off her 12th career win.
"We pulled it out of the barn and charged the battery," Brackett said
of her off-season work on the fast #23.
Manchester faced no challenge for second, with Debbie Marston falling
a half-car length shy of Sessions in a valiant bid for third.
Christina Spaulding moved into fifth when Lisa Vining's result was
disallowed in tech.
Dubuc, Craig Bartlett and Jason Hannigan led a rookie sweep of the top
three in the stock six-cylinder Renegades when all was said and done
in the "house of horrors." Mark Turner and Gerard Cote wound up fourth
and fifth.
Acceleration Series action resumes next Wednesday, June 18 at 6:30
p.m. OPS cranks up the speed again this Saturday at 6:30 p.m., with
feature racing in five divisions highlighted by a 100-lap main event
for the Allen's Coffee Flavored Brandy Mini Stocks.
