East Coast Snocross announces Choko Design Sport Cup award for 2010-2011

East Coast Snocross announces Choko Design Sport Cup award for 2010-2011

CHESHIRE, Conn. (Nov. 29, 2010) - Each winter, those who follow the sport of snocross keep their eyes fixed on experienced, seasoned veterans as they strive to earn the coveted Pro class championships.

Yet beginning with the season-opening event on Dec. 11-12 at the Burke Mountain Ski Resort in East Burke, Vermont, those same fans will have good reason to follow an often-unwatched division of racers all season long.

Officials from East Coast Snocross (ECS) have announced the new Choko Design Sport Cup award for the two-day overall champion in the Sport Super Stock class. Riders in this class run two separate finals on Saturday and Sunday, so points will be tallied in both to determine the overall champion. One finish per rider can be cast out in the final tally.

Just as it does in any form of motor sports, consistency pays big dividends in snocross. The Sport Super Stock rider who has earned the most points after eight events will be pronounced 2011 Choko Design Sport Cup Winner and receive a $750 credit for Choko apparel. The second place rider will receive a $250 credit for Choko apparel.

With each new season comes an eager group of talented riders advancing to the next division. After a successful run in the hotly-contested Junior division, riders stepping up to Sport are looking to hone their skills while competing against the seasoned veterans. It’s exciting to see them improve and mature, and now there's even more reason to watch their progress.

"While the Pro and Semi-Pro riders often receive a great deal of attention, the young racers in our Sport division work hard to improve, as well," said ECS Co-Owner Bob Roscoe. "The Choko Design Sport Cup brings some well-earned recognition to the future stars of snocross. We've got some very talented riders advancing into the Sport division this season. All of us at ECS thank Choko Design Powersports for recognizing their efforts, and urge our fans to watch these young athletes as they compete for trophies, bragging rights and Choko Design apparel all season."

Founded in 1983, Choko Design originally designed high-end snowmobile suits and apparel for the developing leisure markets. The line soon grew into providing apparel for the automotive racing scene, and today U.S. auto makers GM, Dodge and Ford, as well as Snap-on tools and others - all trust Choko to design, manufacture and distribute high-end licensed apparel across Canada and the United States.

As the company grew, it decided to sell out it's snowmobile division in 1990 to CDI International, headed by current president Eddie Majerfeld. This created two sister companies under the Choko leaf brand logo; Choko Motorsports for the automotive industry, and Choko Design Powersports by CDI Inc. for the Powersports industries (snowmobile, atv and motorcycle).

Choko Design Powersports directors, who had ample experience in this industry, have built a snowmobile product line with an enviable reputation for quality design concepts and superior durability. To learn more about their full line, go to www.chokodesign.com.

A lot of hard work and preparation has taken place behind the scenes as ECS readies for its big debut at Burke Mountain. Mother Nature has been doing her part with early snowfall and cold temperatures, and ECS officials realize the season opener is just two weeks away.

NEAR Hall of Fame Adds Galullo, D’Amore, Bardwell

NEAR Hall of Fame Adds Galullo, D’Amore, Bardwell

Pioneering New England modified star the late Danny Galullo, early car owner Louie D’Amore, and the much-celebrated racer Buddy Bardwell have been added to the New England Auto Racing’s Hall of Fame’s Class of 2011 by the organization’s Veterans Committee. The trio will join nine previously selected nominees at the 14th annual Induction Banquet on Sunday, Jan. 30 at LaRenaissance Banquet Hall in East Windsor, CT. Ticket forms will be on the NEAR website (www.near1.com) in the near future. The three veterans will be inducted along with the previously selected drivers Punky Caron, Dan Meservey, Russ Nutting and Jerry Dolliver, car owners Rich & Ray Garuti, Stanley “Skip” Matczak, Vic Kangas, and Speedway Scene publisher Val Lesieur.

A multi-time Riverside Park champion, “Dangerous Dan” Galullo was one of the premier players within the former United Stock Car Racing Club. Also on his career resume is the 1962 United Stock Car Racing Club Grand Championship, a feat accomplished by winning at many of the United-sanctioned tracks that once dotted the Northeast. He recorded multiple victories at Plainville Stadium, Waterford Speedbowl, West Haven, Cherry Park, Malta, NY, and Springfield, MA. He also competed in the NASCAR Grand National Division at New Jersey’s Old Bridge Stadium in 1956. Following a serious heart-attack, Galullo retired from the sport while still in his prime. He passed-away in 1974.

Harboring a life-long interest in auto racing, as a young man Louie D’Amore attended automotive trade school in Dedham, Ma. Following graduation, he owned sprint cars from the late thirties through early fifties. His car won the first-ever feature race at Thompson on May 26, 1940. He campaigned at virtually every track in the Northeast featuring sprinters enjoying success at venues such as Reading, Bloomsburg, Williams Grove, Dover, and Flemington. His cars were routinely sought out by the top drivers of the era such as future Indy 500 winner, Lee Wallard and URC champion, Bob Cooney. Today at 92 years-of-age, D’Amore campaigns a replica of his original #10 sprint cart on the Northeast vintage circuit assisted by his sons.

“Blazing Buddy” Bardwell (so-named by young announcer Ken Squire), started his remarkable New England racing career in 1949 at Brattleboro, VT. driving a 1934 Ford coupe for car owner Perley Fielders. From-there, he went on to score many wins at Northeastern haunts such as Keene and Claremont in New Hampshire, Massachusetts’ Rhythm Inn, and Brattleboro, Vermont in naming just a few. A typical racing weekend for the always-active Bardwell started on Thursday and concluded on Sunday evening. Utilizing his familiar Hudson-powered #13 1934 Ford coupe with the distinctive “steer-horns” adorning its roof, Bardwell was not only a crowd-favorite, but a huge winner. In later years, he became an active participant on the vintage circuit with the same car.
