NNS Race Recap: This Time, Keselowski Gets The Win At Gateway

MADISON, Ill.—Brad Keselowski made a triumphant return to Gateway International Raceway Saturday, passing Mike Bliss with less than two laps remaining to win the 5-hour Energy 250 NASCAR Nationwide Series race. It was the final NASCAR race at the 1.25-mile track.
Keselowski was 200 yards from victory in the July race at Gateway when he was knocked into the wall by Carl Edwards and finished 14th. Keselowski started in the back of the field Saturday after arriving after qualifying from the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event in Martinsville, Va., but still was able to lead 83 of the 200 laps en route to his second consecutive victory and sixth of the year.
Keselowski was running second to Penske Racing teammate and Illinios native Justin Allgaier with 10 laps remaining when the final caution came out. Allgaier, Keselowski and third-running Edwards pitted and took four tires. When they came out, they were behind Reed Sorenson and Josh Wise, who stayed out, and Bliss and Jason Leffler, who took two tires. Keselowski was fifth, Edwards sixth and Allgaier sixth for the restart on Lap 196.
Sorenson jumped into the lead, but Bliss passed him and had the lead halfway through the 199th lap.
Coming through Turn 4, Keselowski got a strong run on the outside and passed Bliss for the lead within sight of the white flag. Keselowski pulled ahead by a couple of car lengths and won by .227 seconds over Bliss. Allgaier finished third after capturing the pole, followed by Leffler and Edwards.
Keselowski, the NASCAR Nationwide Series standings leader, was unable to clinch the 2010 driver title early at this event, but could do so in two weeks at Texas. Keselowski is 485 points ahead of second-place Edwards and needs to leave Texas with a 391-point lead over second place in order to claim his first NASCAR national series title.

DEREK, HOW WAS YOUR RACE?

The car was tight all weekend. We just tried throwing new setups at it left and right. (Second-place finisher Larry Gelinas) just has an incredible motor, and it shows. He drives right past me. If I can't get enough of a run on him on the bottom and get right up to his door, then I'm done. I know he's driving right back by me.

All in all, it was a good weekend. The car's in one piece. We tried some new stuff with the car, and we know what we can do next year and what we can get away with.

WITH A BRAND NEW SETUP THIS WEEKEND, DID YOU LEARN ANYTHING FOR NEXT YEAR?

We're just trying new stuff to get off the corners with this crate motor. We need to get through the turns as fast as possible to keep up with these big engines. We've just been testing and testing different things and trying different setups, and the Wrold Series is definitely the race to try it because it's not a points race.

Overall, I'm hapy with everything.

HOW DID IT FEEL TO BE NAMED MOST POPULAR DRIVER?

It's amazing. This track is awesome. It's got a great fan base here. It's just great it to get it two years in a row. That with two championships -- I'm loving this place.

CHARLOTTE, NC (October 15) – Pro All Stars Series (PASS) officials are pleased to announce the release of the 2011 schedule for the PASS South Super Late Models. The schedule reflects the continued growth of the series with several new venues joining the list of premier facilities that PASS races at in the Southeast. The season will begin with PASS South’s first trip to the Anderson (SC) Motor Speedway since 2007. PASS South will stay in the Palmetto State for race number two returning to Ron Barfield’s Dillon (SC) Motor Speedway on Saturday, March 26 for the 6th Annual South Carolina Clash.

On April 7-9, PASS returns to the Historic North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Carolina for the first of two events there. Waterford Speedbowl Race Report

Theriault started 18th and inched closer to the Top-10 in the first half of the race -- but a lack of caution flags late in the event cost the No. 57 Varney Insurance Ford valuable track position. Still, in his first full season of ACT competition, the 16-year-old driver posted five Top-10s in 10 starts and ended with a Top-10 finish in the overall standings.

FINAL EVENT OF 2010 SEASON

***************

AUSTIN, IT LOOKS LIKE YOU NEEDED ANOTHER CAUTION OR TWO TO HELP GET SOME TRACK POSITION.

It was not an ordinary race -- there were not many cautions at all (only two). We were coming up toward the front early, but (race winner Joey Polewarczyk) was just so fast he was putting people a lap down. I'd just gotten up to 13th when he lapped me -- and when the caution came out (on Lap 68), Joey was right in front of me so I kind of got caught there.

If caution had come out a little before then, we probably could have had a better day. But you know what? You can't really look at it like that. It's racing.

UNOFFICIALLY, IT LOOKS LIKE YOU MISSED THE ACT ROOKIE OF THE YEAR AWARD BY JUST A FEW POINTS. ARE YOU DISAPPOINTED?

Not at all, to be honest with you. It came down to the last race of the year, and we're not disappointed.

I was looking back at the beginning of the year -- and after Oxford (in May), we were 11 points behind. We made up that deficit and built a lead -- so even to come a couple points shy of winning it was a big deal for us.

We got better as a team. So did the competition. A couple times during the year, we probably were not on our game as much as we should have been. But we still made progress every week, and that's the big thing.

WHEN YOU LOOK BACK AT THE END OF THE YEAR -- PARTICIPATING IN THE ACT INVITATIONAL AND QUALIFYING FOR THE MILK BOWL -- YOU'RE PROBABLY GOING TO LOOK AT ALL THE POSITIVES, RIGHT?

Definitely. There were 61 cars at the Milk Bowl (at Thunder Road) and just to qualify for that race was big.

I really don't know what we could have done different this year. You know, we learned a lot every time we went back to a track -- and next year we'll get even better. Even if you go to a track twice, you can't say you're perfect at it. It takes many times to know what's going on at a place -- even the second time at tracks, I was still learning. I'm excited about next year already.

JOEY, HOW DOES IT FEEL TO WIN THE MILK BOWL?

It's amazing. It really hasn't sunk in. To look at the names that have been on the list of people that have won this race in the past -- and to know how old I am now -- it's pretty amazing to have my name on that list now, too. Luck was on our side today. You couldn't say that a lot about us early in the year, but today it definitely was.

This feels awesome. It's just been an amazing two weeks for us.

AFTER QUALIFYING ON THE FRONT ROW AND THEN WINNING THE FIRST SEGMENT, YOU HAD TO FEEL LIKE YOUR CAR WAS CAPABLE OF WINNING THE RACE.

It definitely helped winning that first segment and getting a 'one.' I knew as soon as we turned some laps on the track that we would be good -- as long as I was smart, the car was capable of winning. We made some good moves out there, and the luck luck really plays into it, too.

One time in second segment, I was on inside lane and (second-place finisher Brian Hoar) was on outside. The inside lane just went and the outside didn't -- and I was able to make some room between him and I.

WAS THERE ONE KEY FOR YOU IN THE RACE?

You know, in the first segment, Brian got out to an early lead and made I made a good move to get by him -- and that was probably a key. But really, the move that probably won us the race was just being patient.

There were a lot of chances where I could have stuck it where I shouldn't and risked getting into a wreck. But I stayed patient, because I had a car I could make some passes. Just by being patient and smooth, I could get a good stretch over second place, especially in that last segment.
